APPLICATION GUIDE

Getting the Setup Right

Water-based ink rewards a well-tuned setup. The three most important factors are mesh count, squeegee choice, and viscosity management.

01
🔲
Mesh Count
90T – 120T

Use 90T–120T mesh for most water-based textile printing. Lower mesh (55T–77T) for specialty HD effects. Higher mesh (140T+) for fine detail halftones. Finer mesh retains water-based ink better than coarser mesh.

💡 Flood the screen generously — water-based ink dries in the mesh faster than plastisol.

02
🪓
Squeegee
60A–70A

Use a softer 60A–70A durometer squeegee. Harder squeegees can starve the ink. Apply moderate pressure with a slower, even stroke. Two strokes may be needed for full colour density on darker fabrics.

💡 Keep the stroke speed consistent — uneven strokes cause colour variation.

03
🌊
Viscosity
Thin if needed

Global Aqua is ready to use directly from the container. If viscosity is too high in hot or dry conditions, add a small amount of clean water (up to 5% by weight) and stir thoroughly. Do not over-thin — this reduces colour density.

💡 Never thin with solvents — water-based ink requires only water.

CURING GUIDE

Curing Water-Based Ink

Water-based ink curing is more demanding than plastisol — moisture must fully escape the ink film. Proper airflow in the dryer is critical.

01
💨
Flash Cure First
Flash Between Colours

Flash cure between each colour pass at 100–120°C for 10–15 seconds. This gels the ink film so subsequent colours print cleanly on top without bleeding. Do not full-cure during flashing.

Skipping flash cure on multi-colour water-based jobs causes colour bleeding and ink pickup.

02
🌡️
Final Cure Temperature
160°C

Final cure requires the ink film to reach 160°C throughout. Use a conveyor dryer with sufficient dwell time. Ensure adequate airflow — water must fully evaporate during cure. Tunnel dryers work better than flash for final cure.

No airflow = moisture trapped = cracking after wash. Check dryer airflow.

03
🧺
Wash Test
60°C Wash

After curing, wait 24 hours, then test wash at 60°C. A properly cured water-based print will retain colour, softness, and adhesion. If colour fades significantly or cracks, the cure was insufficient.

Testing only cold wash is not enough — test at 60°C for accurate wash fastness.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Common Problems. Direct Solutions.

Water-based ink requires a more controlled setup than plastisol. Most problems have simple, fixable causes.

Ink drying in the screen mid-print

Normal with water-based ink in warm or dry environments. Flood the screen frequently between strokes. Add a small amount of retarder if available, or work in a cooler, less windy space. Keep a spray bottle of clean water to mist the screen if drying occurs.

Print fading or cracking after first wash

Under-cure is the most common cause. Check that your conveyor dryer has adequate airflow — moisture must escape during cure. Verify ink film temperature reaches 160°C, not just air temperature. Increase dwell time in the dryer if needed.

Poor adhesion on polyester or synthetic fabrics

Standard water-based ink (Global Aqua) does not adhere well to polyester. Switch to Global Akrysol, which is formulated specifically for synthetic fabrics. Ensure fabric is clean and free of fabric softener or oils before printing.

Ink bleeding on the fabric surface

Bleeding usually means too much ink applied (thick deposit) or incorrect mesh. Use a finer mesh (90T–120T). Reduce squeegee pressure. Also check that you are not over-thinning with water — excessive thinning reduces viscosity and causes bleed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Water-based screen printing ink uses water as the carrier instead of PVC or solvents. The ink penetrates the fabric fibres rather than sitting on top, resulting in an ultra-soft hand feel and breathable print. It is ideal for fashion garments, vintage-style prints, and eco-conscious production where low VOC and soft feel are priorities.

Plastisol ink is PVC-based and sits on top of fabric fibres — it is more opaque, easier to use, and highly consistent. Water-based ink penetrates the fibres, resulting in a softer hand feel and more breathable print, but requires more careful management of screen drying, curing airflow, and fabric type. Both cure at 160°C for 3 minutes. The choice depends on the desired hand feel, fabric type, and production environment.

Global Aqua (standard water-based) works best on 100% cotton and high-cotton cotton-polyester blends (e.g. 50/50 or 60/40). For 100% polyester, nylon, or synthetic performance fabrics, use Global Akrysol — it is formulated specifically for hydrophobic synthetic surfaces. Both product lines are available through us across Gujarat.

Global Aqua is the standard water-based colour range, optimised for cotton and blended fabrics. It comes in 13 standard shades ready to print directly. Global Akrysol is an acrylic-based water-resistant ink designed for synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon where standard water-based inks fail to adhere. Both are part of the Global Inks water-based range available through INKrease in Gujarat.

Global Inks water-based inks cure at 160°C for 3 minutes. Unlike plastisol, water-based ink requires adequate airflow in the dryer to allow moisture to escape. A conveyor dryer with proper airflow is strongly recommended. Flash cure between colours at 100–120°C, then final cure at 160°C. Always verify with a wash test.

Yes — unlike plastisol, water-based ink can begin to dry and block the mesh if left without printing for even a few minutes, especially in warm or dry conditions. Always flood the screen immediately after each print stroke. Keep a water spray bottle handy to mist the screen surface. Work in a cooler environment if possible. Clean blocked screens immediately with water and screen wash.

For standard water-based textile printing, use 90T–120T mesh. Lower count mesh (55T–77T) is used for specialty HD water-based effects or when a heavier ink deposit is needed. Higher mesh (140T+) for fine halftone detail work. Finer mesh helps retain water-based ink and reduces drying issues compared to coarser mesh.

No — water-based ink and plastisol ink must never be mixed. They use completely different carrier systems (water vs PVC/plasticiser) and are chemically incompatible. Mixing them will cause the ink to coagulate and become unusable. Always clean screens and equipment thoroughly between switching ink types.
